If you’re busy running your business, it’s sometimes difficult to know whether you’re managing the health and safety aspects and staying on the right side of the law. A health and safety audit is an essential tool helping you understand what is going right, and what is not.
There are many legal duties placed on employers and its directors / managers regarding health and safety Legislation. A rating document of businesses and their departments is a way of periodically checking if and how they are complying with their health and safety duties.
It also allows comparisons to be made between the areas that are performing well regarding health and safety management and those that are not. This enables “best practice” to be spread throughout a company and, consequently, resulting in progressive improvement.
It is recommended that all organisation’s are subject to a periodic health and safety audit to ensure that their Safety Management Systems are adequate and to help to achieve continuous improvement.
It is a legal requirement for companies to have formal Safety Management System (SMS) in place. However, it should be remembered that the extent and complexity of any management system will depend upon a number of factors. For example, a single garage with three or four employees, carrying out mechanical repairs and servicing of cars, will only require a basic management system. On the other hand, an oil and gas production company, with over 10000 employees, will require something much more formal and much more intricate.
At Fire Safe (UK) Ltd, we know there’s more to successful Health & Safety management than simply having up to date policy documents. The effectiveness of any organisation’s safety management resources, policies, practices and procedures largely depends on having the right attitude to safety in place. So, we work effectively with clients to not only improve policy documentation but to promote a positive safety culture within the business.
